CASE OF TRESPASS

Jack Leef, seaman, 45, appeared in the Magistrate's Court today charged with assaulting Constable L. A. Cockburn last night in the lawful execution Of his duty and also with being unlawfully in the enclosed yard of 17 Garrett < Street. He pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given that Leef had been seen at the back of the house and that the police had been notified. After the constable arrived the accused struck at him and attempted to escape. It was stated on his behalf that he had gone to the house to reoay some money he owed and that he would not have struck the policeman had the latter not drawn his baton and struck at the accused. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., dismissed the assault charge and convicted him on the other, ordering him to come up for sentence within six months if called upon.
