PEOPLE OF THE SAAR
"TREMBLING wh"H ANXIETY"
LONDON, September 18. t "The population of western Germany is _ possessed by trembling anxiety," said a German war correspondent, reporting on the conditions in the Saar in a broadcast over the German forces radio. "As the thunder of distant Allied artillery rolls over the Saar men and women stream into the country with spades and pickaxes to prepare defensive positions for the German troops.
"The German towns in the west have air-raid alerts daily lasting many hours. Allied fighter-bombers swoop over the countryside and make lowlevel attacks on towns and villages. Factories are closed down to enable the staffs to participate in the defence of the'; Saar. The people are giving up their last few remaining hours of sleep at night to dig defences." ■
