VICTORY LOAN

ANOTHER 17 DAYS

"SALUTE THE AIRMAN"

Today marked the opening of Salute the Airman" week in the Victory Loan campaign. It was to have been introduced in spectacular fashion by a massed aircraft display over the city at midday, but because of the weather this had to be postponed. It is hoped to arrange it for tomorrow. The latest figures show that £12,----620,357 is in hand out of the total of p 40,000,000 aimed at, and there are 17 days to go before the loan closes. Of the total subscribed £3,332,625 was received last week, Saturday's contribution amounting to £286,051. To fill the loan by October 4, a daily average of £1,610,567 is required. Wellington, with £3,412,020 to get out of its objective of £4,674,000, will have to find £200,707 daily. This district is still eleventh on the list of percentages. The following are the percentages of objectives obtained by the various districts:—Southland, 55 per cent.; Auckland, 50; Otago, 39; Taranaki, 38; Marlborough, 38; Gisborne-East Coast, 36; North Otago, 32; Wanganui, 31; Manawatu, 31; Hawke's Bay, 29; Nelson, 27;* Wellington, 27; Northland, 27; Wai-kato-King Country, 26; Wairarapa, 25; South Canterbury, 24; Buller, 24; Westland, 23; Thames-Bay of Plenty. 21. PUBLIC SERVICE ACTIVITY. The New Zealand Public Service Association is taking a prominent part in the organising of committees of staff members in the various Government Departments and arrangements are being made, where necessary, for organisers to address staffs explaining the various forms of investment in the loan. Base Records has already got off to a flyihg start and has built up a strong organisation to handle war savings accounts and the sale of Victoy Bonds. To date, promises have been made in this department for the purchase of approximately £1000. worth of bonds. The enthusiasm displayed by wageearners is outstanding and should be an incentive to the big financial institutions not to delay in making the contribution which they know they are going to make to the loan. WINDOW DISPLAYS. A feature of Air Force Week, •which will be of interest to many members of the public is the large number of window displays throughout the city. Many hundreds of thousands of pounds' worth of equipment, Army, Nayal, and Air Force, has been used during the loan campaign, and the Victory Loan Committee is grateful to all shopkeepers who have allowed the use of their windows. Any business which would care to display Victory Loan posters is asked to ring 40-590. These window displays are an important part of the campaign as they demonstrate not only some interesting facets of service activities, but also provide an object lesson in co-opera-tion between the Services and an important section of the community, mainly the business firms. The idea behind these displays is to get the people of Wellington Victory Loanminded. The victory rallies which are being held throughout the week at various points have this function also. Tomorrow, at Victory Corner, a most unusual presentation will be given by Chinese residents of Wellington. These representatives of a great Allied nation have arranged a programme commencing at 12.15 p.m., which will include a Chinese magician. The bondsellers in the audience will be young Chinese girls in national costume. Members of the Young People's Club have made a most encouraging start in their house-to-house canvassing, and have found quite • a demand for National Savings stamps as well as bonds. The bond-selling officer at Victory Corner had a pleasant suxprise today when a lady from Woolworths (N.Z.), Ltd.. walked into his bond-selling booth and asked for 2685 £1 bonds, presenting, a cheque for this amount. This was the first instalment of bond purchases by Woolworths' staffs throughout New Zealand.
