THREAT TO KWEILIN
VALUABLE AIRFIELDS LOST
LONDON, September 17. A Chungking communique says that the Japanese, pressing the offensive in south-west China, are approaching the big Chinese city of Kweilin. The main Japanese body is advancing down the railway from the north-east, and another Japanese column is advancing from Canton. It is reported that the American 14th Air Force has abandoned its airbase near Kweilin. Only one fighter strip for forward operations is being kept open. On the rest of the Kweilin system of airfields demolitions have been carried out with bombs planted on the runways, and stores, ammunition, and fuel which could not be got away were destroyed. The Kweilin fields, laboriously built by coolies two years ago, were used by General Chennault's famous "Flying Tigers.''
