HEAVY FIGHTING

LONDON, September 17.

Very heavy fighting has flared up on the Riga front. The Moscow communique says strong German attacks have been beaten back west in the area where the Russians threaten the German corridor. According to the Germans, the Russians have launched an assault on three sectors in an arc around the Gulf of Finland, and one spearhead, thrusting through a gap torn in the German line, is within 20 miles of Riga itself.

. LONDON, September 16. Details of a Soviet offensive on the Baltic front are given by the German news agency. It said that the Russians launched a sudden powerful offensive part of which was a pincer movement against Riga and the mouth of the Dvina.
