ADVANCE UP DANUBE

Russian bombers ahead of the Red Army lines along the northern and central fronts have launched a new softening-up offensive, says Reuters Moscow correspondent. They are using-' advanced air bases from which the Luftwaffe formerly operated. _ Soviet reports indicate that the Red Army's advance up the .Danube, is meeting with heavier resistance and German reinforcements are arriving frpm Rumania. Tonight's Soviet communique says the Russians north and west"of Ploesti advanced and occupied over 40 localities including; four railway stations. The Red Army south of Bucharest has entirely cleared the Germans from the northern bank of the Danube between Giurgiu and Oltemta and occupied a number of localities including- eiffht railway stations. :. s It is pointed out that the clearance of an additional 36.miles ot the bank of the Danube from Oltenita to Giurgiu places the Russians along another. 25 miles of the Bulgarian border -in addition to the stretch, of 97. miles previoiisly held between the Danube and the Black Sea. .
