CONVOY ATTACKED
NEW YORK, September 2. A navy search plane attacked an enemy convoy consisting of two small cargo vessels and three sampans near Iwo Jima, says a Pacific Fleet communique. One vessel was sunk and another damaged. Another search plane the same day strafed and sank a sampan near Jaluit. . ' Allied planes attacked Pagan Island on Wednesday and Thursday and heavily damaged enemy gun emplacements. Defence installations at Yap, Kili, and Nauru were also attacked. . Tokio official - radio . says that 100 enemy carrier-based planes bombed Chichi Jima and ■ Iwo Jima on Friday morning. American warships shelled I Chichi Jima.
