PROGENY OF DEFAULTER

The Trentham trainer W. Hawthorn has two progeny oil Defaulter to get ready for racing. River view and Deprive. The former is a chestnut filly from the Rossendaie mare Homedale, who is from imported Hasten Home, and the latter is from Privet, another Australian-bred mare by Rizzio from imported Tiger Rose. When Riverview •was paraded at the National Sales he was carrying a scar on the off-hind leg, evidence that he had got into wire, but his impressive appearance encouraged Mr. F. Dwyer, of Wellington, to go to 625gs to silence the opposition. Deprive also went to the same bidder, but in this instance the bidding closed at 270gs. Spur Mark.—Taken south for the second day of the National Meeting, Foxcatcher was badly squeezed as the field jumped away. Judged by a long scar on her off-flank, it would appear as though she was raked by a spur, or some ■ object that was particularly sharp. However, the wound is now ■healing, and the Defoe mare is looking bright and fresh. Hacked About.—That good filly Bridge Acre is being-hacked about, and little is being asked of her meantime. Her younger brother, Al-Sirat, is being taken along quietly, and may not.come to hand so early as did the older member of the family. Better Things.—Alcyone, the younger sister to Foxstar, is coming along nicely under W. Hawthorn's direction at Trentham. Although she failed to contribute anything towards her keep last season, better things should lie ahead this term. Her owner, Mr. C. McParland, of Wellington, paid 675gs for her at the 1943 Sales. A Fine Stamp.—The Foxbridge— Rippling Waters colt Hormuz has built up into a commanding type, and if looks count for anything this brother.to Water Vixen should go far. At his last start in the old term he ran third" in the Air Force Handicap at the patriotic meeting of the C.J.C. at Easter. That was his only monetary return, so he has a long way to go to recoup the Indian owner, Mr. F. H. Mehta, of Bombay, who paid 1400gs for him. A Solid Mare.—The Revelation—Mm Lv filly Tuis, who is now a three-year-old, is building up into a very! solid type under W. Bryce's charge! at Trentham. She has still to make \ her debut, having been given plenty i of time, and she should make good. She is a half-sister to Bridgehead (by Foxbridge), who ran very creditably I on the second day of the Grand 1 National Meeting, and also claims relationship ■ with the New Zealand and Wellington Gup winner Happy Ending. - Has Been Unlucky.—Fortune has not favoured Lord Broiefort in his racing activities to. date, but, bred, as he is, ne should go on improving. The Trentham representative is looking in good order, and as he comes from a well-performed family it will be surprising if he does not also make good. By. that sire of stayers, Broiefort he is from the Chief Ruler—Limelight' mare(Joyous. The dam was a winner and the grandam won the C.J.C. Great Easter, Metropolitan Handicap, Jockey Club Handicap, etc., and was a halfsister to Starland, Spotlight, Starmist, and other good performers. The greatgrandam, Stardancer, was a winner of the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap, and a sister to Warstep. Former Northerners. — Transmitter and Transcend, two former Aucklanders, are now in W. Hawthorn's! stable at Trentham. The former is a six-year-old by Vaals from the Rosenor mare Telepathy,. and the latter is by Gynerium from the Absurd mare Lady Bentmck. The same trainer has also taken up a chestnut gelding by Commandant from an All Red mare.
