CROWDED CLUB ROOM

VICTORIA LEAGUE PARTY

There;was such a large gathering at the reception given by the Victoria League yesterday afternoon in honour of the Mayoress (Mrs. Appleton) that the only "clear space left in the clubroom was a narrow aisle down the centre. Mrs. J. A. Doctor, the president, who welcomed Mr£. Appleton and presented her with a shoulder spray of flowers, described her as the first citizen of Wellington among womenfolk. Wellington was lucky to have Mrs. Appleton as Mayoress. The life Mrs. Appleton had undertaken entailed much unselfishness and was full of difficulties. In her reply, Mrs. Appleton said she had never been one to seek the limelight. "When one has a family of five one has little time for outside things," she said, "but having' worked with the Lady Galway Guild for the past five years I have learned a great deal about the fine work .done by Wellington women, and as Mayoress I am learning things all the time. I have attended two meetings of war workers before coming here today, one at Lyall Bay arid the other at Mount Victoria. The work of women in this war has been magnificent, and I am sure victory will come the faster as a result of their efforts." Mrs. Appleton went on to speak of the post-war world and the need there would be for women to continue to play their part. ...After: the-serving; of afternoon tea MisS 'Lucy "Cowan' entertained with elocutionary: :items. .
