HAVOC AMONG TANKS
SCUTTlfllilG BY GERMANS
RUGBY, August 14. The rapid advance over territory which has been the scene of recent R.A.F. Tyyhoon assaults on German armour is producing evidence that the Germans have taken to scuttling their tanks. Normandy's deep-cut lanes, while affording excellent cover for panzers, are proving a very mixed blessing. V Here and there, quite large columns of tanks have been found in lanes, all utterly destroyed and burnt out. At the head and tail of the column there 1 have been tanks bearing the unmistakable signature of the ■ Typhoons. Others, trapped' between " the steep banks and cut oil from advance or re-
treat; bear the ignominious marks of self-destruction —their breeches blown out and the;r turrets detonated.
Figures coming in from France also emphasise the havoc being wrought among enemy tanks and transport by air attack. The latest confirmed score for yesterday's attacks in the Falaise area by the R.A.F. Second Tactical Air Force is 364 tanks and transports destroyed, • probably destroyed, and damaged.—B.O.W.
