NEED FOR TIMBER CONFERENCE OF PRODUCERS The State Forest Service had never contemplated that the producing capacity of all departmental mills would ever exceed 10 per cent, of the total cut of both indigenous and exotic timber,, said the Minister of State Forests (Major Skinner) in an address to the annual meeting of the Dominion Federated Sawmillers' Association in Wellington. "The .Minister also said that notwithstanding- newspaper reports no final decision in regard to the establishment of £he Reporoa mill had1 yet been made. . • • The Minister congratulated the, federation and all those associated with the sawmilling industry upon the magnificent effort made in meeting* the wartime needs for timber for emergency defence purposes, particularly under the exceptional difficulties of the past war years. He referred to the still-increasing quantities of timber that will be required for housing and rehabilitation, and expressed confidence that the. industry would be able to stand up to. this fresh demand. In this connection the meeting. subsequently appointed a special sub-com-mittee to promote every possible measure for speeding up timber production. The officers of the federation for the current year appointed by the general meeting are as follows:—President, Mr. L. E. H. Baigent (Nelson); vice-presi-dent, Mr. A. Carter (Rangataua); and an executive committee comprising representatives of each of the main tim-ber-producing regions. .
