SUDDEN DARTING MOVES
THE AMERICAN PENETRATION Rec. 11 a.m. RUGBY, July 27. Striking advances along the whole western sector in Normandy are reported this evening by a correspondent at SHAEF. Between Caumont andßerigny there has been a general move forward by the Americans. West of Caumont they have reached Mouflet, which is five miles west of Caumont, and represents a movement of two miles from Montrabot. • The Allies are in the vicinity of Notre Dame d'Elle, six miles east of St. Lo. They have occupied Berigny. Further west, the Americans have cut the Lessay-Periers Road and patrols have penetrated to the town of Periers. An armoured column penetrated beyond Marigny and advanced some distance along the road towards Coutances. Pockets of resistance between the routes of the armoured car advance to St. Gilles and Marigny are being cleared. Forward elements of the American break-through force penetrated beyond the little town of Canisy, four miles south-west of St. Lo, early this mor.ning. The attack .is -swelling out behind the advance elements, and pockets are being mopped up without much delay. The drive seems to be made by small, darting, and swiftly-moving columns to east, west, and south, catching enemy units on the flank and in the rear with such suddenness that the German military organisation is at sixes and sevens. The furthest advance places the forward troops on the Canisy-Cerisy road. On the right flank of the attack the Americans have crossed a river a few miles east of Lessay. A little further west, in the neighbourhood of Joliment, an American patrol advanced 1000 yards without meeting with real opposition. An earlier message from another correspondent said that all the British and Canadian positions in the Caen sector remain intact, despite heavy counter-attacks. A counter-attack threat last night was frustrated before it could be launched. It was discovered that enemy armour and troops were forming up for a counter-blow aimed at Ousting the Canadians from newly hard-won positions. Typhoons spitting rockets dived low over the cftiemy and broke them up. • Just south of Verrieres,. at 9 o'clock last night, Typhoons sighted and strafed a concentration of enemy tanks. —8.0. W.
