CLUB IN THE CITY

GIRLS IN INDUSTRY

FOURTEEN-ROOMED HOUSE

A house of 14 rooms, formerly owned by Sir Donald McGavin, has been purchased by the United Industries Club (Inc.) to serve as a club for women and girls engaged in industry in the metropolitan area. Sister V. Dawes recognised the need for such a! club a number of years ago when she was associated with the Wellington City Mission and she worked hard to get people interested in this object which, with considerable financial aid from the Government and manufacturers, has at last been achieved. The house, which is a fine, halftimbered building of Elizabethen design, situated at 200 Willis Street, on the corner of Ghuznee Street, is ideal for the purpose. The rooms are spacious and dignified and, through the efforts of friends, are already nearly completely furnished. There are handsome Indian rugs, on the polished floors, all' the' tables, chairs, etc., match the dark wood panelling of the walls, and everything is fresh and new. A HOME AWAY FROM HOME. The facilities available will include a library and writing room, a rental room for 'social gatherings for members and their men ■ friends,. a laundry, sewing. and ironing : room, showers and changing room, and a fully equipped kitchen and din-ing room for teas. The aim of the founders is to make it as much a home away from home as possible. There will be activities within the club and these will include physical culture under Miss R. Ste- : phenson, of the Internal Affairs De- I partment, sewing and music under the supervision of Mrs. W. Tabor, choral practice with Mr. Stanley. Oliver as instructor, home-nursing and hygiene under Sister D. A. Whitelaw of the Red Cross, arts and crafts, dramatic art, and dancing. The membership fees are very low, yearly membership being £1 Is, and associate membership (one who is willing to give personal service to club) 2s 6d.

The board consists of the three trustees, Messrs. F. P. 'Walsh, ■ ,H. O. Pittendrigh,: and". 3. Annand-SiWith, and Mrs. G. R. Youngs (chairman), Mesdames A. Dennistoun-Wobd, W. Tabor, X Arbon, A. : Green,.M.l. Still, Misses V. Dawes, J. Roberts, A. Gardiner, and A. Lister. The? president .is Mrs. Peter Fraser, and the. vice-presidents are Lady Pomare and Lady Shirtcliffe. A permanent matron is to be engaged. • The official opening of the club will take place some time next month.
