SMASHING OF TOULON
FRENCH NAVAL BASE
Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, July 12. Following their successful attack on Toulon on July 5, Allied heavy bombers returned to the French naval base yesterday. Photographs show that eight hits were scored on dry docks housing submarines. Other bombs fell on jetties and oil stores and among baracks, repair shops, railway yards, and freight and passenger stations. These successive attacks should further reduce the German submarine effort in the western Mediterranean. No enemy aircraft were encountered at Toulon yesterday, but flak was intense and accurate. —8.0. W.
