N.Z. MUNITIONS WORK
AUSTRALIAN'S TRIBUTE
The war effort of New Zealand in the manufacture of munitions, shipbuilding, . and aircraft work has won the warm appreciation of a leading authority in Australia, Mr. Essington Lewis, Director-General of Munitions for the Commonwealth. Accompanied by a representative of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Limited, Mr. Lewis recently paid an official visit to this country and inspected munitions activities as arranged by the Government in private manufacturing establishments, also small ship construction at Auckland, and the aircraft repairs section in Wellington. In a letter to the Acting Prime Minister (Mr. Sullivan) the Australian expert said:— '
"We have no hesitation in saying that all this work was carried out in a most praiseworthy and satisfactory way and reflects great credit upon the Government, the, officers in charge, and also the workmen and women concerned. Industrially, as we saw it, the war effort on munitions, small ship construction, and aircraft repairs is a very fine contribution." Before assuming his present position Mr. Lewis was managing director of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Company. ■'■- ■■- -
