FINED FOR ASSAULT

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. H. B. Yeoman was passed at a meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Football Association last night. Reference was made to the valuable services rendered to Association football _in Wellington by Mr. Yeoman and his family.

Mr L. A. Atkinson has been appointed secretary to the Public Service Commissioner. He has been a member of the Public Service for 20 years, commencing his career as a cadet in the Customs Department. He was one of the eight men chosen in 1940 from all Government services to form the first class at the school of public administration at Victoria University College. Latterly he has been attached to the inspectorate in the office of the Public Service Commissioner.

Mr. James Thawley, who recently retired from the position of organist at the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Church after 50 years' service, was honoured last evening by the holding of a social gathering in the. church hall. The Rev. C. Hedl«y Bycroft presided. An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music was given. The church secretary (Mr. T. E. Reynolds), on behalf of the church and congregation, presented Mr. Thawley with a pedestal lamp, and expressed the church's intense appreciation of his long and gracious service. On behalf of the church choir, Mr. T. L. Cocks asked Mr. Thawley to accept a gold chain in token of the, high respect in which he was held by its members. . Supper was served, and the evening closed with the Doxology.

Mr C. G. Costley-White, a principal in the Dominions Office, recently serving in the office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in Canada, has arrived in Wellington on appointment as assistant secretary in tie office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom. Mr. Cost-ley-White is accompanied by Mrs. Costley-White and their children.
