AGENTS' COMMISSION

Sir, —With reference to the discussion between the Minister of Supply and the Bureau of Importers reported in "The Post" on Friday, 23rd inst., the contentions of the Minister are quite wrong. Commission is allowed by the manufacturer out of his own funds. It is not a discount and cannot be claimed. by the Ministry of Supply. .Nor is it within the right of the Ministry to assess what may be the value of service rendered by an agent. The Ministry is not qualified to decide such a matter. A* rate of commission is not determined by the service'rendered on any one transaction. In 25 years' experience I have often worked solidly for years, earning very small commission while doing the spade work. That work was done in the hope of reaping the reward in later years. Why then should the Ministry of Supply expect to reap where others have sown?

The Bureau of Importers is right in contesting this attempt to deprive agents of what is justly theirs. I can confirm that manufacturers were asked to deduct commission and that it would be paid to the agents in New Zealand. The Minister's action must be condemned and it is to be hoped that Chambers of Commerce and business- men generally will. support the attitude of the' Bureau of Importers in this matter. —I am, etc., INDENTOR.
