GORDON TOO GOOD
PROFESSIONALBOXING
Clarrlo Gordon proved too experienced for Jock Colviu in a professional boxing contest at the Town Hall, Wellington, last night, and won easily on points over ten rounds. Colviu was not In the same class as tlio fast and aggressive Aucldaiider, mid although lie kept tryIng, ho absorbed v considerable amount of punishment. Gordon weighed O.'J'A and Colvln 0.8. Gordon began aggressively and .landed two hard rights in the opening round. Colvln s stance, with his left foot far extended, was uu advantage in defensive lighting and for the purpose of covering up, but accentuated Gordon's advantage in reach and made it dinicult for him to score effectively. The ex-Olympic Games representative was Dghting lit and showed little fatigue even at the end of ten rounds in which ho had forced tho paces all the way Towards the end of the bout ho used his right more frequently as he discovered that Colvin's attack lacked steam, and in tho concluding rounds ho figured in some two-handed attacks that had Colviu "eovering-up desperately on the ropes. Colvln did his best to mako a fight or it at all times, and although Gordon's hard hitting must have shaken him, he showed a toughness and ability to stand up under punishment that should serve him In good stead ' with more experience. Indeed, despite tho battering he took over the'last lew rounds there was only one occasion when. It appeared at all likely that Gordon might win by a knock-out and then ho managed to evade trouble by elusive footwork and skilful cover-lng-up. At times he scored with his left when ho adopted a more upright stance, but his punches did not appear to bother Gordon. Jt was a victory for experience, and only in the close work did Colvin appear anywhere near a match for his opponent. Captain P. Thomson refereed. Tho amateur preliminaries resulted:—P.
