BOYS' INSTITUTE

THE VOCATIONAL WORKSHOP The H. Dillon Bell Memorial Workshop was officially opened by the Acting Prime Minister (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) in a visit to the Wellington Boys' Institute aril S. A. Rhodes Home last evening. The vocational workshop has''been in operation for a number of years, but has recently been extensively enlarged and modernised in conjunction with the alterations and additions to the rest of the institute. Mr. Sullivan addressed a large gathering of boys and their relatives in the new vocational hall. The Prime Minister, he said, took a very deep interest in the activities of the institute. He referred to the generosity of the Bell family in providing the funds to set up the workshop, which played a very important part in the work of the institute, and also of the Sargood Trust and other generous donors whose contributions had paid for the modern equipment. ■ To the boys, Mr. Sullivan said it must be a great pleasure to have the facilities of the institute in learning to make things as well as the advantages of the other activities organised by the management committee. An even greater pleasure would be derived from the knowledge that they were to make toys that would be distributed at an appropriate time to children in hospitals and health camps. That they were enabled to make things which would bring pleasure to others should be one of the greatest joys in life. The men and women engaged in such an excellent work as the institute were rendering a great service to the community. Mr. Sullivan and the visitors were shown over the workshop by the supervisor, Mr. D. Bartlett, and then inspected the games rooms and gynasium and the 40-bed "hostel of the institute.
