BOMBERS HAMMER ENEMY
Rec. 9 a.m. CHUNGKING, May 17. American fighter-bombers are steadily hammering at the Japanese positions along the Burma Road, hitting concentrations at Pingka, Marriien Pass, Mengta, and Tatangtzu, states a Chungking communique. Mitchells attacked the Kenghluang bridge southward of Lampang, in Thailand, and also destroyed^ buildings and set fire to a supply depot at Wanpahsa, on the Burma-Thailand border. Fighter-bombers patrolling the Yangtze River strafed 80 box-cars and destroyed a lc-comorive. They also destroyed four small vessels and damaged another. At Linsiang they damaged 'many other rivercraft. Mitchells encountered 22 Japanese fighters and several bombers over Yochow,' shooting down two and probably destroying six more. Seven were damaged. All the American planes returned to base.
