TURF NOTES

CULAB.")

._„.. . ..(BY "BIN'C PLEASING OUTCOME

CLUB'S GOOD TURNOVER

After the drop of £13,000 on the \ opening day of the Wellington Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting some did not regard the second day very hopefully. Ori the face of things, with the transportation difficulty, there appeared reason for the pessimism, and early in the morning of Saturday the attendance certainly appeared somewhat sparse.' As the day advanced, however, the turnover per race increased, and the aggregate for the day of £63,913 was most gratifying. Actually, the second day's tote figures were in excess of the one-day effort of last autumn. Good Double—The Rey de Oro mare Safety Pin completed an excellent double by following up her first day's success over two miles in the R. A. Armstrong Handicap by, beating the sprinters in the Dominion Handicap on Saturday. Her success in the big race on the opening day had brought to Safety Pin a rehandicap of 48yds over two miles and of 12yds over a-mile and a quarter, and her third in the Wairarapa Handicap, under the circumstances, was quite a good effort. But it was rather surprising to find her succeed in the sprint from the new mark after failing to get in the money from off the fronton the previous Saturday. The luck in the running had a lot to do with it, for s>he was furnished with a beautiful opening at the top of the straight. ■ - ' ■ Appeared Harsh.—-Jack's Pal, who had followed up a fourth in the Armstrong Handicap by taking the Ferry Handicap on the first day, like Safety Pin, went back 48yds and 12yds respectively for his engagements on Saturday. • From his fresh mark the Happy Voyage gelding had to be content with sixth over two miles and fifth, over a mile and a quarter. On the face of his performances the rehandicap appeared to be rather harsh, but the handicapping system is largely automatic. Comfortable Win.—Whereas inability to get free early enough had prevented Cabin Boy from doing better than third in the two-mile event on the opening day, the Jack Potts gelding was up with the leaders swinging into the straight in the Wairarapa Handicap. Thereafter his owner-trainer, P. P, Gallagher, drove Cabin Boy very confidently and won with a good deal in reserve. This six-year-old is definitely good. . . '. Drivers' Successes.—After registering two successes on the opening day, C. R. Berkett failed to add to his account on Saturday, whereas M. C. McTigue drove two winners. In the absence of O. E. Hooper, McTigue drove .:nave of Diamonds, and although the Jack Potts • gelding had failed to show up in either of his outings on the opening day he won the Camp Handicap on Saturday very definitely. The.same driver,. in the preceding event, had scored with his own representative, Vimy Ridge. That other Canterbury trainer, F. G. Holmes, had one win each day with Safety Pin. -Three Successes.—The Nelson trainer L. F. Berkett enjoyed three successes with members of his team, Mac Wynne and Karangi getting on the winning list on the opening day when driven by C. R. Berkett, and the trainer himself driving Fulwood to victory in the Wainui'Handicap on Saturday. Race Incidents. —Despite the, roominess of the course, or perhaps because of it, a number of the horses at Trentham. displayed a tendency to run about, and Karangi and Lanaco were both unlucky enough to be carried oft the course going away from home on Saturday. However, at her second tilt Lanaco "went for the doctor" at the barrier rise to hit the front and stay there. It was an overdue; turn of luck for C. S.; Donald, although R. Donald was at the helm. Uncertain Line.—As on the opening day at Trentham there was not a great deal of form to assist patrons at the second tilts. Each class had two opportunities of racing, but of those who fulfilled1 dual engagements, Parwrack was the only one to again > figure in the money, and this Wrack gelding retreated from second to third at the second essay. There was certainly some contrasting form. Good Dividends. —Whereas on the opening day at the Wellington Trots six of the winners paid double figures, dividends of Saturday did not reach the same dimensions, only three being at really long odds. The aggregate return for an outlay of.one pound on each of the eight winners on the first day was the big figure of £115 12s 6d, but it retreated to £85 Is 6d on the second day. Backers of favourites will contend that it was quite enough. Easy Win-.— Zona Grattan, who won the Silverstream Handicap at Trentham in hollow fashion, has done little racing As a six-year-old she made only one appearance in public, and was oft the scene all last term. On the opening day of the Wellington Meeting she ran a creditable fifth over two miles, and reserved for the longer event on Saturday she made no race of it. Grattan was the last foal produced by the Four Chimes mare Little Joan, who died in 1941/ Deferred.—At a meeting of: stewards of the Wellington Racing Club, held yesterday; it was decided to proceed with the Winter Meeting at Trentham in July, but the drawing up of the programme is being deferred meanA Fine Record.—Air Port, winner of the Storey Memorial at Te Rapa : on Saturday, is fast building a fine record for himself, for previously this term he had won the Poland Cup, Ashhurst Cup (at Marton), Franklin Cup, and Tauranga Cup. Although he won the Ashhurst Cup on a fast track the Surveyor horse has always shown a preference for holding conditions. Progeny of Surveyor have shown this ability, and further, Air Port comes from Country Air, the dam being a half-sister to those proved mudlarks, Mana Whenua, Horowhenua, etc. Overdue. —There was , a time when Par Avion promised to go far, but the Ringmaster horse disappointed. A long overdue win came his way m the hurdle event at New Plymouth, and it should not be his last, for he has plenty of pace to assist him. His dam, Damaris (by Limond) is a grand-

daughter of Eulogy, but her progeny have not gone far, and about three years ago Mr. G. M. Currie disposed of her to Mr. L. G. Paul, of Wanganui. Third Change.—Our Pat, winner of the maiden event at New Plymouth, is now a member of H. Dulieu's team. In the early portion of the term he was with R. Barlow, but was later taken over by L. Knapp,. and at the Manawatu Meeting in March he ran a creditable race without being able to get in the money. Bein^ by Posterity from the Pombal mare Variable, thus a full-brother to Dynasty, he should go on improving with age. First Win.— Bought at the 1943 National Sales by Mr. W. S. Goosman for 500 guineas, Bueno opened his winning account in the juvenile event at Te Rapa on Saturday. Being by Battle Song from Honeste. a product of the Limond —Homage horse Honour from the Martian —Lady Lucy mare Lucinda, - Bueno has staying blood on both sides of his pedigree. At the time of the sales he was an impressive-looking youngster, and resembled Carbine, from whom he descends, in male tail,- about the head. Under Way. —The steeplechasing season is now under way, and Idle Hour,] winner of the Churchill Steeplechase at New Plymouth on Saturday, should be heard from again. Last season-he ran second to Noko in the Manawatu Steeplechase after having been largely responsible for the pace,' and at his next start he was fourth in the Mariri Steeples at Trentham, despite having broken down half a mile from home. He was the second foal of the Tea Tray mare Canton, which suggests brilliance rather than staying power, but is by the Galloper Light horse Whirlwind, who sired some useful sorts.
