HUGE VOTE ASKED

AMERICAN NAVAL PLANS

Rec. 11 a.m

RUGBY, April 12.

Washington messages report that the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee has approved a record 32,647,000,000-dollar Naval Appropriation Bill. The largest single expenditure proposed is 8,029,000,000 dollars for the construction of new ships.

The Bill also provides 4,600,000,000 dollars for 24,230 new naval aircraft, virtually all combat types, which will bring the naval strength to the authorised number of 37,735 modern planes.

The ship construction will consist of 807 combat types, and 30,151 others, mostly landing craft.

Rear-Admiral Cochrane, giving evidence before the Committee, said that by the end of June, 1945, the United States navy will total 10,244 self-pro-pelled vessels, including landing craft and other special boats.

Admiral E. J. King said the Allies would not be satisfied with victory in the Pacific short of Japan's destruction, and declared that a long struggle was ahead in the Pacific. He pointed out that as Japan withdrew to her inner defences her power to resist would increase.—B.O.W.
