U.S. WAR PRIORITIES
BIG GUNS & LANDING-CRAFT
WASHINGTON, April 11. The War Production Board has authorised an over-riding priority placing heavy artillery on a par with invasion landing-craft as the most urgent items in the whole production programme. Many observers believe that this action reflects a revaluation by the high command of the effectiveness of artillery as a result of battle experience in Italy, where. air power has failed to live up to predictions and the American forces are now using the 240-millimetre gun. Major George Artman, who recently returned from the Anzio beach-head, described the Allied position as a German artillery impact area. He said there was not a safe square foot of ground on the whole beach-head. The Allies were forced to dig in in the way they did in the first World War, with deep holes and overhead cover.
