DALGETY'S OPERATIONS.
"I considered it desirable to sound a note of warning last year about tho probable results for tliis year, but I think wo can congratulate ourselves that tho business of the company has been reasonably well maintained," said tho chairman of directors of Dalgety and Co. (Major-General Sir John H. Davidson), at the annual meeting in London in February. "I feel, however, that it is not out of place to repeat this warning, for the disadvantages to which I drew your attention were not fully felt during the year under review. I also drew your particular attention last year to the growing burden of taxation. This burden continues to Increase, and is the subject of careful scrutiny.
"Our business in Australia and New Zealand is deep-rooted and solid. Our organisation is efficient, and our staff, though stretched to its utmost capacity, is excellent, ir I may be allowed to express . a personal opinion, it is that the present Governments in both the Commonwealth and the Dominion, having the welfare of their' countries at heart, will frankly realise that such concerns as ours perform a useful, and well-sustained service to the community jit a moderate rate v of remuneration. "With regard to wool, the company's chief interest, there Is little on which to comment. Changes in; the level of production were small, the Australian clip being somewhat larger in poundage though less In bales, and that of New Zealand ratlier below last season's record clip. Realisations were considerably higher owing to the 15 per cent, increase ln price paid by the- British Government." The previous year's dividend of 6 per cent, was maintained.
