FROM GREAT FAMILY

LINES OF MOUTOA BOND

The success of Moutoa Bond in the Sockburn Handicap at Riccarton did not come out of its turn, for this /-idlooking mare had not previously won this term, although she had run second twice in good company. In the Wainui Handicap. 1 mile, at Trentham, in October, she came from a long way back to gather up all with the exception of Hasten, and in the Wairarapa Cup she ran second to Alethea, who was then at the top of her form. Previously she had shown a preference for mile journeys, and one of her successes as a four-year-old came in the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham. j Her dam, Moutoa Treasury (by Paper Money), was a brilliant sprinter, but the graridam, Moutoa Ivanova, was a [full-sister to Sasanof, which brings to 'Moutoa Bond a great strain of staying blood. Further, her sire, Bulandshar, has also produced many useful sorts over middle distances. Not Favoured.—Lord Advocate drew a bad barrier position in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton, but he worked through on the rail in the run home to get up for third. It was quite a useful showing. Failed.—Favourite for the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton on Monday, Tara King never flattered his many supporters. He finished seventh without looking like getting any of the money. Nevertheless, the outing should have been beneficial. Same Sire.—Two sons of Solicitor General, Lex and Chellow Dene, staged a great finish in the Courtenay Handicap at Riccarton. The former I had to withstand a strong challenge i from Salary earlier, and Chellow Dene got up in the last stride to share the 1 honours at the post. Career Ended.—Vitement, who last season won hurdle races when trained by A. M. Wright at Awapuni, broke a leg when he fell in the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie and was destroyed. He was an eight-year-old by Raceful (son of Martian) from the Marble Arch mare Persis, dam of many good winners. . Sound Effort.—The Covonach colt Colais 'was a- warm: order for the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, and won well. He was hard pressed by Bridge Acre, but yon with something in hand after having been checked racing on to the course proper. Coming Right.—Capronella followed up a third in the Hastings Hack Cup by dead-heating with Alienate in the Waipukuraii Cup. She is by Kincardine from Vanestep, who ran second to Cuddle in the New Zealand Cup nine "years ago. Not Possible.—There is no possibility of the Great Easter-Autumi Handicap double being completed this year, for Master Dash, winner of the first "leg," is not engaged in the distance race. However, the stable, has an opportunity of completing it with Caithness. , A Long Road.—As a four-year-old Maharajah won ov*er a mile and 212 years at Levin, but has found it hard to add to his' winning account. At Tauherenikau last New Year's Day he ran twice for two seconds, and another second came his way at Riccarton on Easter Monday. Neither his dam (Choral) nor grandam (Anthem) did much racing. Anthem was an imported mare by Royal Canopy.
