MR. HUGHES AND COUNCIL
SYDNEY, April 5. After.six weeks of silence on the subject, the Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition, Mr. W. M, Hughes, announced tonight that he was prepared to resume his membership of the Advisory War Council, This decision follows receipt of an invitation from Mr, Curtin. Interest centres around the question of Mr. Hughes's future position with the Parliamentary United Australia Party and particuarly his position as deputy leader of the party. Mr. Hughes withdrew from the council on February 18 together with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr, R. G. Menzies, in accordance with the decision of the Parliamentary U.A.P. Mr. P. Spender was the only other tJ.A.P. member of the .council. He did not resign, and in consequence was expelled from the party.
