PLOESTI AGAIN
RAIDED FROM ITALY
IMPORTANT OIL CENTRE LONDON, April 5. Rumania has again been attacked- by Allied bombers from Italy. The oil town of Ploesti was attacked by Fortresses and Liberators. The bombers went for the railway junction and a nearby oil refinery. Strong forces of Lightnings and Thunderbolts escorted the American bombers. They met stiff fighter resistance and intense anti-aircraft fire. Earlier this evening, Berlin spoke of violent air battles over Albania, Rumania, and Bulgaria. The Germans stressed the strength of the Allied fighter force and said that Rumanian and Bulgarian as well as German fighters were in action. Ploesti used to supply Germany with one-third of its oil. It was attacked'at the beginning of August. Other heavy bombers attacked Yugoslavia today, going for rail targets and the junction of Nish. Bombers from Britain played their part today in the double onslaught on Germany and occupied Europe. The ¥>nly official news is that American Liberators and Thunderbolts attacked the Pas de Calais area, but the Germans say that formations were over western and central Germany during the afternoon. They talk of fierce air battles, and add that unfavourable weather helped the Allied penetrations.
