COMMENT BY COMMISSION
The War Damage Commission makes the following comment on the above statement:—
"With some exceptions the statement is considered not unreasonable comment on the scheme. As regards the illustrations given of loss settlements, the Commission points out that no mention is made in the Regulations of the application of an average clause, and it is not the intention of the Commission to apply such a condition to earthquake insurances under Regulation 3, which refers to compulsory insurances. "Secondly, in cases where cover outside the fund is current, it is intended that fund insurance would apply, to any loss only after the outside cover had been exhausted. Also it might be pointed out that the estimates regarding the fund and its income are excessive."
Fire broke out in the Jollands, Ltd., plasticine factory, Cuba . Street, Petone, last night, and the main portion of the building was badly damaged by fire and water. The Petone Fire Brigade received the call at 10.5 p.m., and when they arrived flames were pouring through the two ventilators in the single-storey building. The brigade attacked the fire from front, rear, and roof, and kept the flames from the machinery and a quantity of inflammable material in store. - •'
