RETURN TO PEACE

PROBLEM OF PRODUCTION

Rec. noon. NEW YORK, January 21. A warning that the conversion to peacetime production will take as long as the conversion to peak war production was issued by the Under-Secre-tary of War, Mr. R. L. Patterson, when addressing the Mayors' Conference at Cfoic3f£o ■ Mr. Patterson said: "If, by some magic, we could recreate pre-war conditions, they would result in a 50 per cent, reduction in the national income, extensive unemployment, and a reduction of our production capacity He added: "Either we will evolve something better or be afflicted with something far worse. There is no turning Mr. Patterson pointed out that the War Department does not consider the end of the war even in sight. Nevertheless the return to peacetime production is being actively planned. _ He concluded that the conversion problem will be somewhat lightened by the virtual certainty that the war will not end simultaneously in * all | theatres. At least a year or more will ! elapse between Germany's collapse and I Japan's surrender.
