PAPER SHORTAGE IN U.S.
NEW YORK, January 20. A catastrophic paper shortage is predicted by the American Paper Pulp Association unless the War Man-power Commission takes immediate steps to relieve the labour emergency in the pulpwood industry- A survey by the association showed that cutting operations in certain sections were reduced, by 32 per cent in 1943. In the long run such curtailments will be reflected in a comparable reduction in pulp production, the association said, because the paper industry used 700,000 cords of wood more than it received. Inventories in 1943 were critically reduced, and it was estimated that there would be a shortage of 3,000,000 tons' of paper in 1944 unless remedial meas, ures were inaugurated. '
