CARGO PILLAGING
COST IN AUSTRALIA
Rec. noon, SYDNEY, Jan. 20. Overseas shipping companies and underwriters in Australia paid £110,000 last year in the settlement of claims arising from pillaging of cargo on the waterfronts. In" Sydney alone oversea companies had paid £10,000 during the last six months g A shipping executive said that the proportion of cargo from the United Kingdom which was pillaged was higher than it had ever been, because the amount of pillageable cargo was less and constantly diminishing. The pillage cost per ton on all cargo from the United Kingdom was 29.2 d, compared with 32.6 d for the previous six months. Before the war the cost was approximately 2d a ton, The figures relating to pillage on ships from the United States showed a substantial increase in the last six months. Four thousand pounds was paid, compared with £1500 during the previous six months.
