PILGRIM'S DEATH
SAUDI ARABIA INCIDENT
Rec. 9 a.m. SYDNEY, January 20. A young Persian who went on a pilgrimage to Mecca was overcome by, the heat during his circumambulation of the Kaaba (the holy place containing the celebrated Black Stone, towards which all Mohammedans face during devotions), and collapsed and vomited into his pilgrim's robes. NonPersian pilgrims in the vicinity accused him of defiling the holy place, and indicted the Persian before the Governor, with the result that he was decapitated by sword in the presence of a large crowd. The incident has caused the Government of Iran to lodge a strong protest with the Government of Saudi Arabia, accompanied by a demand for reparations. Iran in future will forbid pilgrimages to Mecca unless Saudi Arabia ensures the safety of pilgrims.
