NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
p.A. AUCKLAND, This Day. Emerging from intermediate ranks in which she was 100 and 220 yards freestyle champion and 100 yards backstroke champion, Miss Beryl Westerby (Southland) made an impressive debut in the senior New Zealand swimming ranks this morning when the national championships were continued m steady rain. She contested the 220 yds freestyle and won her heat impressively, 4 3-ssec faster -than Miss Ola Hobson (Canterbury) won hers. Aucklanders in Miss Norma Griffin and Miss Kathleen Grey were second respectively, but the .indication's are that Miss Westerby and Miss Hobson will dispute the final tonight, with Miss Westerby's chances favoured. The Southland breaststroke swimmer, V. Vial, showed his class when he won his heat in the 100 yds event, 6sec faster than V. Simonsen in the other heat. . Otago monopolised the honours in the 75yds intermediate girls' breaststroke. Gibson (Otago) won his heat in the junior boys 100 yds freestyle in easily the fastest time, suggesting that he will take the final honours. '.',,, There is a possibility that tonights programme will be swum in the tepid salt water pool.
