SUMMER CARNIVAL

FIELDS OF TOP QUALITY

INTEREST IN £5000 CUP RAGE

The Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting, this year opening tomorrow, takes on greater importance than in the past by reason of the big stake attached to the Cup race, and the fact that a fourth prize is provided. The club is offering £5000 in stake-money for the event, £3100 and the gold cup valued at £150 going to the winner. Without exception, the fields have filled to practically maximum strength, and the class represents the Dominion's best, consequently patrons should enjoy a day's racing of the highest standard. With the totalisator trend continuing upward the officers of the club have every reason to anticipate the best meeting of all time.

The majority of the horses engaged tomorrow are familiar names to racegoers, but recent form has been widely spread as a result of the continuance of the holiday fixtures till last Saturday, and the issue is by no means clear in the various events to be contested. From the north, south, east, and west horses have gathered to battle for the honours, and with an average of slightly over 23 per race there is all the material for keen • struggles. The form of the holidays should be of material assistance to patrons, though they appear to be confronted with a more than ordinarily difficult problem in their search for winners and placesetters FIELDS REVIEWED. Activities will commence at 11.35 with the: 11.35 TRENTHAM HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £550; 11 furlongs. Vivid Night .. 10 12 Beneve 9 0 Glaciate 10 7 Bunsby 9 0 Keen Play ... 10 4 Capine 9 0 Voltaire 10 3 Cetewayo 9 0 Abdicate 10 0 High Morale . 9 0 Te Awe Awe . 9 9 Maharajah ... 9 0 Advocate 9 7 Mansura 9 0 Cracroft 9 6 Polarto 9 0 Renarde ..... 9 6 Sandy Cape ~ 9 0 Gold Dip .... 9 2 Tau-Uru 9 0 Ringeraft ... 9 2 Varuna 9 0 Aga Kay .... 9 0 Opening events at Trentham have seen many upsets, and for the past three years backers have been slightly off the line where the highweight event is involved. Strangely enough, a complete new array to that of last January will parade. Recent winners figuring are Vivid Night, Glaciate, Keen Play, Voltaire, Abdicate, Te Awe Awe, and Advocate, but there are others lower down the handicap who might' be upsetting factors. Viewed as a likely improver, Cracroft is a northerner that will appeal, and should the track be easy Beneve"Would come into favour. Others who will have friends include Bunsby, Georgia, High Morale, Maharajah, Sandy Cape, TauUru,. and Varuna, but strongest support will probably come for: VOLTAIRE, VARUNA, TE AWE AWE. 12.20 'THE WELLINGTON STAKES, £1000; for two-/ and three-year-olds; weight-for-age; 5 furlongs. Mr. Valiant . 8 6 Colais 6 12 Tamaiti Pai . 8 6 Master. Ted .. 6 12 Twelve Pensacola .. 6 12 Pointer 8 6 Theio Light . 6 12 Walk Off ... 8 6 Bridge Acre . 6 9 Molly Martia 8 3 Breezealong . 6 9 Nawab 7 12 Plassida ... 6 9 Subdued .... 7 9 Young Barrage .... 6 12 Margaret 6 9 Blue Bonny . 6 12 Enthusiasts are anxiously awaiting the meeting between Nawab, the champion two-year-old of the north, and Subdued, who .has carried all before her at this end of the island and at Riccarton. To date Nawab has won £1325 in stake-money, and Subdued has £1210 to her credit, which brings them the full penalty of 141b. However, the filly receives a 31b allowance for her sex. Five three-year-olds are engaged, and Mr. Valiant and Molly Martia may play a part in the finish, just as two of the older division did last January. However, the logical choice is a two-year-old of class, and indications are that Nawab arid Subdued, will dominate the betting. Some danger might come from Bridge Acre, winner of the C.J.C. Pioneer Handicap at Riccarton last month, and Colais, who has shown possibilities. Strongest support will probably come for: SUBDUED, NAWAB, BRIDGE ACRE. 1.5 APPRENTICES* PLATE, £550; 7 furlongs. Crackerjack '.. 8 7 Our Pat .' 7 11 Genghiz Khan 8 7 Royal Greek . 711 Lord Darnlcy . 8, 7 Sedgemeer ... 711 Piko Piko .. 8 7 Te Rum 7 11 Sal's Pal ... 8 7 Arustra 7 8 Sunlore 8 7 Bonnieve 7 8 Vera Lynn ... 84 Etlanthus ... 7 8 Fortune's Smile 711 Etta Quex .. 7 8 i Foxstar 7 11 Foxrose 7 8 High Ideal .. "7 11 Pink Bonnet .78; Irish Note ... 7 11 Roianui 7 8 Latin Bay ... 7 11 Tideless 7 8 Note Raid ... 7 11 Wee Bun .... 7 8 Paybook ... 7 11 With such a large field engaged in the Apprentices' Handicap, post positions and the ability of the lad on top will influence backers in their selections. The handicaps are based on the weight-for-age scale, and thus Sal's Pal, who was a winner at Dunedin last Saturday, escapes a rehandicap. This southerner is definitely useful and promises to'come in for solid support. Nevertheless there are several good class hacks in the field such as Vera Lynn, Fortune's Smile, High Ideal, Irish Note, Kincrop, Latin Bay, Our Pat, Royal Greek, etc. Well favoured in respect to rider and barrier position, money should come for: FORTUNE'S SMILE, LATIN BAY, ROYAL GREEK. (.52 FiTZHERBERT HANDICAP, £600; for two-year-olds ; 5 furlongs. Sorrell 8 12 Barrage 7 8 Master Ted .. 8 11 Aqua 7 6 Gay Chat .... 810 Broiedame ... 7 6 Master Baron . 8 7 Golden Barb . 7 6 Theiolyu .... 8 7 Lily Ann .... 7 6 Carthage 8 4 Theio Light . 7 6 Sir Boswell .. 8 2 Breezalong .. 7 4 Pensacola ... 8 0 Montosorrie .. 7 4 Gay Corrie .. 713 Play-Suit 7 2 Tifox 7 9 Anne Bank .. 7 2 Battle Shield . 7 9 Gala Song ... 7 2 Hormuz ...... 7 9 Mine Host ... 7 2 Kelmont 7 9 Gynette ...... 7 0 Plassida 7 9 Lady Lustre . 7 0 Some few'of the juveniles standing their ground in the Wellington Stakes also figure in the Fitzherbert Handicap, and it is not unlikely that they will be content to fulfil the later engagement. Sorrell, the topweight, has won twice to date, and heads the weights with 8.12. Then comes Master Ted, who dead-heated in the ■Wanganui Debutant Stakes, but who had to be content with second placings at his two later starts. Gay Chat has been a consistent place-getter in the north without being good enough to win, yet is required to give away 31b to Master Baron and Theiolyn, both of whom are ,winners. Likely improvers further down in the handicap are Sir Boswell, who opened his account on the second day at Tauherenikau, Gay Corrie, Tifox, and Plassida. There is plenty of scope for differences in opinion, but a popular trio may be: PLASSIDA, SIR BOSWELL, GAY CORRIE. 2.40 THE WELLINGTON CUP, £5000; 2 miles. Kindergarten . 10 9 Glenfalloch .. 7 8 Lord Happy Ending 7 8 -Chancellor 9 9 Palfrey '» 7 8 Lou Rosa ... 8 13 Amigo ....... 7 6 Gladynev .... 8 5 The Raker .. 7 6 Battledress ... 8 4 Merry May- .. 7 4 Alethea 8 2 Royal Merit .. 7 2 Macedoine ... 8 2 Broieveine ... 7 0 Tara King ... 7 12 Full Hand 7 0 Rink 711 Greenfeast ... 7 0 Foxola 7 9 Nighean 7 0 Classform ... 7 9 Piastre 7 0 Don Quex ... 7 8 The way is now cleared for the titbit of the day, the Wellington Cup, and what an array of talent is offering. Pride of place in the handicap is held by Kindergarten, and a win for the champion under 10.9 would give him the distinction of becoming the weight-record-holder for- the race over any distance. He is faced with no easy task, yet might well make light of it. The presence of the northern "star" Lord Chancellor adds to the interest in view of his win in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day under 9.2. for which he has been lifted to 9.9. Good though he is, patrons will be a trifle chary in view of the inability he showed on his previous visit to Trentham to handle left-handed going. To attempt to review the performances and merits of the others would run to considerable space, but included among those likely to be accorded good support are Lou Rosa, Battledress, Alethea, Macedoine. Foxola, Classform, Don Quex, Glenfalloch, Palfrey, and Merry May. But for the trouble that overtook him at

Ellerslie the three-year-old Tara King would have had a host of supporters. Now he may be passed by in favour of: KINDERGARTEN, GLENFALLOCH, MACEDOINE. 3.30 RUAPEHU HACK HANDICAP, £550; 1 mile. Lady Spiral . 9 .5 Brolefleld .... 7.7 Sister Sal ... 9 5 Carnforth ..7 7 Sunblaze 9 2 Day Lighting . 7 7 Spirit 813 Farcical .... 7 7 Sea Quex ... 8 8 Foxada 7 7 Black Plato ..87 Good Fun .... 7 7 Madame Rachel 8 7 Honest Sal ... 7 7 Golden Acre ..8 3 Lord Broiefort 7 7 VVorton 8 0 Panamint .... 7 7 Alienate .... 7 9 Some Sing ... 7 7 Gamble 7 8 Eliminated: Te Awe Awe, Wee' Bun, Cracroft, Arustra. Lord Darnley, Gold Dip, Varuna. Note Raid. As a result of her win in the open class at Wingatui last Saturday Sister Sal has been raised 21b, and she and Lady Spiral now share the position of topweight in the hack mile. Lady Spiral was a winner at Tauherenikau, carrying 8.9 to victory over a mile and a quarter, and she must be respected over the shorter journey, despite the advance in pondage. Sister Sal is one of the many Salmagundi -fillies who have proved good, and she should carry her record further. Support will also come for Sunblaze, another winner during the holidays, Spirit, SeaQuex (especially should the track soften), Broiefield, Carnforth, and Honest Sal, and the favourite will probably come from: SISTER SAL, SUNBLAZE, HONEST SAL. 4.18 THE TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, £1500; 6 furlongs. Kol Bag! .... 9 6 Palora 7 11 Beau Vaals ..94 John Gay .... 7 8 Clarice 8 13 Master Dash . 7 6 Whackle 810 Kllleymoon ..7 6 Sweet Biscuit 8 9 Skyhawk .... 7 3 Sleepy Fox ..8 7 Fox Cover ... 7 0 Sir Bradbury . 8 2 Gulf Stream .. 7 0 Theolateral ... 8 2 Sham . Boy ... 7 0 Poutatau .... 8 0 There is plenty of holiday form to assist, or confuse, patrons in the Telegraph Handicap, the open sprint. After running second to Sweet Biscuit in the Auckland Railway 'Handicap with 8.8, the winner having 7.12, Kol Ragi won on the second day with 9.0, Sweet Biscuit being' absent, but failed on the third day when having 9.10. The poundages of both have been sharply advanced to what they carried on the first day at Ellerslie, but Sweet Biscuit now has an additional lib advantage over Kol Ragi. Clarice failed on the first day at Ellerslie, but was second to Kentish on the final day when carrying 8.12, Theolateral being third with 8.4£. Whereas Clarice,,advances lib, Theolateral retreats to 8.2. Beau Vaals, a stablemate of Sweet Biscuit, has previously found the Trentham track to his liking, and Whackie, who raced with big burdens during the holidays on the Taranaki circuit, might also carry his account further on the local track. Horses trained at this end of the island who will be in favour are Sir Bradbury, Palora, Master Dash, and Killeymoon, while John Gay is a likely southerner. Once again there is plenty of room for differences of opinion, but, fined down, a trio likely to come into favour are: SWEET BISCUIT, PALORA, MASTER DASH. 5.7 ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, £1000; 1 mile. Scottish Dale . 9 5 Park Light ... 8 4 Te Kawiti 9 5 Alchemy .... 8 3 Corday ....... 9 4 Foreign Coin . 8 0 Moutoa 'Bond . S 12 Foxcatcher ... 8 0 Good Scout ..89 Lotto ,8 0 Jonathan Jo .. 8 3 Lowry Bay ... 8 0 Flying Ace .. 8 7 Phaleron .... 8 0 Travancore ... 87 The day's activities will conclude with the Anniversary • Handicap, an event for open-class milers, Scottish Dale and Te Kawiti being at the head of the weights with 9.5 i The former won over seven furlongs at Riccarton in brilliant style, but was beaten in the Hazlett Memorial at Wingatui last Saturday. Te Kawiti won. over nine furlongs at Tauherenikau, but under the higher minimum.operating here has been raised an additional 91b. During the holidays Corday brought himself very much to the attention of students of form, and although he will have substantially more to carry he promises to have a host of friends. Moutoa Bond's effort in the big race on the opening, day at Tauherenikau was very ■ promising, and the unlucky Good Scout claimed a sequence of second placings at Awapuni and Marton. Jonathan Jo, Flying Ace, Travancore, Park Light, Alchemy, Lotto, and Lowry Bay are all possibilities on recent form, and the favourite might come from : CORDAY, MOUTOA BOND, FLYING ACE.
