TOUGH FIGHTING
LONDON, January 9,
American troops have been engaged in more tough fighting against the Japanese on both frontsin New Britain. Between Cape Gloucester and Borgen Bay the marines have again advanced. For some time a creek acted as a natural tank trap, and the marines, cut off from tank support, suffered their heaviest casualties of the campaign. Under covering fire, engineers worked through the undergrowth and built a bridge. The tanks lumbered over it and shattered the defences, enabling the marines to reach their objective. There has been a flare-up of fighting at Arawe. Big reinforcements are reported to have reached the Americans in the Saidor area.
