THEFT FROM THE WHARF
Charged in the Magistrate's Court today with stealing 11 tins of marmalade and one carton of candy, df a total value of 7s 10zd, John Frederick Byrnand, waterside worker, admitted stealing three tins and the candy. The charge was amended and Nthe accused, represented by Mr. A. B. Sievwright, was placed on probation for a year by Mr. W. C. Harley, S.M. Senior-Ser-geant G. J. Paine said the accused left a wharf shed at 5.15 yesterday morning and went to a car, wKere a constable found him with three tins of marmalade and a carton of candy. Another constable found him emptying other tins out of a haversack he was carrying. The accused admitted that it was pillaged cargo from broken boxes. The Magistrate said he did not like to send a man to gaol for such a small amount, but it would have served him right if he had been ordered not to work on the wharf. The Court had power to do that, but it would mean taking away his bread and butter. Mr. Sievwright said the accused was a married man with four children, the oldest of whom was seven. ]
