CUP CANDIDATE

PALFREY AT TRENTHAM

In readiness for his Wellington Cup engagement, Palfrey has arrived at Trentham. At the New Zealand Cup Meeting this southerner ran fourth in the Cup race and second to Gladynev in the Metropolitan Handicap, being beaten by very narrow margins in each instance. His turn came in the Dunedin Cup on Boxing Day, when he met with strong opposition from The Raker. A. Messervy, his usual rider, will be again in the saddle. Great Innings. — The Invercargill owner-trainer R. E. McLellan had his sixth win in the Wyndham Cup in eight years when Sascha took the honours on New Year's Day. The Salmagundi mare won among the hacks at Wingatui on Boxing Day, and she followed up her Wyndham success by beating the milers at Invercargill. Easy "Winner.—After winning the Berwick Handicap on the' opening day at Wingatui, Aurora Australls returned south to win the Waikiwi Handicap at Invercargill on Tuesday. In both instances the Salmagundi filly won very comfortably, and she might make her presence felt in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui tomorrow, despite the advance in grade. Not Supported.—Although it had been reported that Invulnerable had not been himself, the half-brother to Royal Lancer narrowly beat Silver Lily in the open sprint at Wyndham. However, on the following day he was beaten by Monetary at Invercargill, and the fact that he was 6-6 in the betting rather suggests that he is still under a cloud.
