NEW RED VICTORY
GORE OF RESISTANCE
LONDON, January 5. ' Bed Army troops have again made excellent progress in their southward drive from the Kiev salient towards the enemy's last lines of communication with the Dnieper bend. A special Order of the Day from Marshal Stalin this evening announced the capture of Berdichev, where a tough core of German resistance had been holding up the right wing of the Russian advance. Red Army troops stormed the fortress %fter a five-day battle. Sixty other places were taken. , The fall of Berdichev will enable .General Vatutin to bring fresh pressure to bear on Zhmerinka, the big railway junction supplying nearly all the German army groups in the Dnieper bend from the west. The. German news agency said tonight that ice is beginning to form along the lower reaches of the Dnieper. Once the river is completely frozen over the biggest obstacle to a Russian drive against the southern flank of the enemy will have been removed.
