RED ARMY'S PURSUIT
CARRIED OUT ON BIG FRONT
LONDON, January 5. The Russians, after capturing Belaya Tserkov, are in close pursuit of Germans retreating south-westward towards the Dnieper bend front, while General Vatutin's' other forces, on a front of 120 miles, are working towards the German defence line on the River Bug. It is too early yet to speak of the trap closing against the Dnieper bend armies,- but the fall of Belaya Tserkov means a further serious deterioration in the German position. There are no official reports of the fighting in the Polish Ukraine frontier area.1, Mobile columns were stated yesterday to be driving some miles beyond the frontier. Moscow states that tjie Germans launched a heavy coun-ter-attack , yesterday in the. Noyograd Volynsk area, and a force ■ made some penetration into the Russian infantry positions but was later wiped out. Four thousand Germans were killed in this area.
