FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. A settlement was effected this afternoon in the dispute at Borthwick's freezing works, where butchers manning the chains refused to start work in the morning. A conference was held with representatives of the National Service Department, the Labour Department, company, and the Freezing Workers' Union. The men started work at 1.45 p.m., according to the secretary of the union, Mr. H. G. Kilpatrick. He said an argument developed over the staffing of the chains and the position was aggravated by men failing to report after having been directed to do so by the man-power officer.
Mr. Kilpatrick added that it was ridiculous to say that a strike in the accepted sense of the word had been called.
