AWARDED THE D.S.O.
Described as "an excellent operational leader," Acting Wing . Commander Russell Merriman MacKenzie, D.F.C., A.F.C., R.A.F., of Christchurch, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
"His many meritorious feats of flying include sharing in the destruction of a Junkers 88 and a one-engine flight from the Aegean Sea to Cyprus," says the citation. "In July, 1943, in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire from the shore and ships in the harbour, Wing Commander MacKenzie shared in the destruction of a large armed enemy merchant ship. His personal courage and devotion to duty have always been of the highest order, and it is due to his inspiration that his squadron has contributed successfully towards upsetting the flow of German supplies to the Dodecanese Islands."
