HUTT ROSE SHOW
In opening the rose show at Lower Hutt yesterday the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, said the rose was deservedly the national flower of England, but it was, .he said, a pity that rose culturists had, in an endeavour to supply more brilliant blooms, neglected to preserve the perfume which was more than half the attraction of the rose. He was glad to learn that an endeavour was being made to restore the perfume. The champion bloom was a "Una Wallace," shown by Mr. E. W. Veitch. The A. Y. Lees Memorial was awarded to Mr. G. W. Cairns, and the Anderson trophy to Mr. A. Anderson. The best exhibit, on the two stands of cut flowers, was a bowl of roses shown on the garden circle staid by Mrs. :S. W. Veitch. Special mention was made of a collection of seeds on the Taita Women's Institute stand. R.H.S. certificates of merit were awarded to the stands shown by the Hutt Garden Circle and the Taita Women's Institute.
