AMIGO TAKES THE CUP

SPRINT TO ALETHEA

SOME SURPRISE RESULTS

After a period of uncertain form, Amigo returned to the list of winners in the Foxton Cup at Awapuni on Saturday. Drawn wide out, he was compelled to cover some extra ground early; but steadily worked to the front to go into a clear lead before reaching the back straight, Don Quex, Sovereign Lad, Nighean, and Te Kawiti being ahead of a strung-out field. Passing the half-mile peg Amigo was still four lengths clear, but the field had closed up approaching the straight entrance. However. Amigo held on gamely to beat the fast-finishing Fiddler's Green, who experienced an indifferent run, by a length and a half, with Don Quex and Sovereign Lad at head intervals. Nighean and The Monarch were next, the latter again coming home in great style. Moutoa Bond proved to be a false favourite, and her fellow-Trentham representative, Foxcatcher, was too far out of it early .to be a possibility.- ~ The Awpuni trainer C. J. Thomson and the stable horseman, W. J. Stevens, who had brought off a good win earlier in the day with Sea Quex, took the sprint honours with Alethea, who was also at good odds. It* was the first appearance of the Mr. Standfast mare this season, yet she proved capable of not only footing it with the sprinters but of staying on too solidly for them. The pace was not fast early, Theolateral and Blue Border being in the van as the eight runners came across the top. with Flying Ace in behind. Turning into the straight Alethea came Ihrough on the inner, with Betterman, who had been slow away, moving round the leaders. The latter finished on solidly, but could not reach Alethea," who was a length to the .good at the post, with Theolateral a neck away. Clarice, after trailing the field right into the straight, came home in great style. NOT ON THE CARD. A confusion in names found Flying Spy and not Flying Spray engaged in the Paiaka Hurdles, and backers who accepted the tip were rewarded with a winning dividend. Sandy Cape and Malacca were both preferred to Flying Spy, but the last-named had too much pace for. Sandy 'Cape and the favourite commenced to drift 'half a mile from home, where. Flying Spy drew clear. Vivid Night and Valky's Boy moved forward to be within striking distance at the last fence. However, Flying Spy held her place to win by a length and a quarter from Taane Pango, who had run up approaching the last fence, with Vivid' Night a length away, and Valky's Boy handy. Then came Malacca, who failed to go on with it after making up ground lost in the second furlong when he was crowded back on the rail. ' Sandy Cape and Maestro were next. A FORMER SOUTHERNER. Brought north by the Invercargill trainer J. A. Rowland last March for delivery to • the Awapuni trainer B. Burgess, Some Sing opened her account in this island when she took the Trial Stakes narrowly but well toom Leybourne and Social Climber. In the race for early positions Sporting Gold snowed up from wide out, with Beech Hill coming with Leybourne from the centre of the line. However, on turning for home Social Climber raced up and carried on in ( company with Beech Hill from Leybourne, Some Sing, Sanger, and Sporting Gold. Swinging into the straight Some Sing secured an opening on the rail to hit the front, and although Leybourne and Social Climber hotly challenged, Some Sing kept the straighter course to win by three-quarters of a length from Leybourne, with Social Climber a neck back. Broiefield finished well for fourth, with Sporting Gold and Beech Hill next. Precious Gold lost her rider a .little over half a mile from home. HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN. Backed down to a very cramped price in the Foxton Two-year-old-Han-dicap, Intense failed her backers badly. She had to be hurried along to wrest the lead from Dancing Water, the pair being practically on terms coming across- the top, and Hoodiki tucked in behind on the rail. Dancing Water ran a shade wide turning into the straight and Hoodiki ranged up on Intense's outer to have the filly beaten. Over the final furlong Firm Lass came fast, finishing better than anything, but Hoodiki squeezed home by a neck, with Firm Lass a similar margin in front of Intense. Dancing Water was a creditable fourth. SEA QUEX WINS WELL. Although not prominent early in the Motuiti Hack Handicap, Citizen, Donegal Bay, and finally Vermette making the pace, Sea Quex- ran up to be handy, to Vermette and Fox Cover at the straight entrance. Despite the fact that it was her first outing for the season Sea Quex responded in the run home to beat Fox Cover by threequarters of a length, with Vermette half a length back. Barrosa was fourth, with Miss Wheriko (always handy) and Black Plato practically in line. Lady Nahleen and "the favourite, Walk Off, were next to finish. ANOTHER FOR PATU PO. Unfolding a strong finishing run, Patu Po registered his third successive, win when he won the Awahou Hack Handicap, scoring sby two lengths from Keen Play, who fallowed the leading bunch into the straight. Golden Acre and Patu Po took up the running passing through the straight,' but Patu Po -was clear entering the back stretch. However, 'the rider of the topweight and favourite allowed Greek Effort to take over in company with Financial, the pair leading him across the top, where High Morale, Skyette, Leisurely (weakening), and Keen Play were handy, the last-named having secured an opening to improve several places along the rail. Landed into the straight Patu Po put in his claim, his great raking strides carrying him to a clear-cut victory from Keen Play, who got up to touch ofT Greek Effort by a head. Metonymy came home in good style for fourth, with High Morale, Man's Pride, Whero, and Merger in a bunch. SPIRIT'S STRONG RUN. Another surprise came in the concluding event, the Wharangi Hack Handicap, when Spirit took the honoui-s quite definitely from Lady Spiral, who had a length to spare from Kahuranaki. The strongest fancied runners, Killeymoon and Kaitoa, experienced bad runs, the latter being again the last to move. Ringcraft and Hikorangi raced to the front within the first furlqng from Lady Spiral and Kahuranaki, but about five furlongs from home Ringcraft dropped back and Lady Spiral led Hikorangi across the top, with Kahuranaki and Spiral ahead of Killeymoon. With two furlongs to go Lady Spiral drew clear, but was under pressure entering upon the final furlong and Spirit ran past her to win by a length and a half. Momentarily it looked as though Kahuranaki would get up for second, but he weakened and had to be content with third money. Ringcraft was a handy fourth. A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE. The weather was dull for the early portion of the Foxton Meeting, held at Awapuni on Saturday, and light, misty rain fell later. Fortunately, it did not continue and the racing took place under excellent conditions on a track that was comparatively fast. There was a large crowd and, under the single-pool system, £48.337 was handled, as compared with £19,471 10s
