THE EDEN CONTEST
P.A. AUCKLAND, October 29. The sitting Labour member for Eden, Mr. W. T. Anderton, now has a majority of 10 over the National candidate, Lieut-Colonel W. H. Fortune, when the available service votes are added to the amended civilian returns resulting from the Magisterial recount conducted by Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. There are still between 20 and 30 service votes to be distributed. The present position of the two candidates is:— Anderton (Labour) 7252 Fortune (National) ............ 7242 | Majority for Anderton 10 In the meantime, Colonel Fortune will be declared elected on the Magisterial figures for the civilian voting, plus the service votes received up to October 11, the day the original declaration in favour of Mr. Anderton was made by the returning officer. On the original declaration Mr. Anderton had a majority of 10, but the Magisterial return, with the service figures to October 11, places. Colonel Fortune eight ahead. Since October 11, 43 service votes for Mr. Anderton and 25 for Colonel Fortune have come to hand, so that the former again has a lead of 10. 'Irrespective of how the handful of outstanding votes are distributed, a further amended declaration will be necessary giving the final voting figures.
