REQUIEM MASS

LATE BISHOP BRODIE P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Thousands ?of citizens filled the Roman Catholic Cathedral today and many more unable to gain admittance stood in driving rain -outside the doors to hear the celeoration of Solemn Pontifical Requiem Mass for the late Bishop Brodie. The cathedral was draped in black and purple, and the officiating priests wore black vestments. Mass was celebrated by Bishop Liston, of Auckland, and Archbishop O'Shea presided at the throne. The coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin, Bishop O'Neil, assisted in the sanctuary. Among the mourners were the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, representing the Prime Minister, the Hon. W. E. Parry, the Hon. P. G. Webb, Mr. S. G. Holland, Archbishop West-Watson, and the Rev. T. W. Armour. The pall-bearers were members of the Hibernian Society, and other members of this society provided the guard of honour. The body was received at Mount Magdala, and will lie in state until tomorrow, when the burial will take place privately. "Though he has gone from us his influence will still continue, and many lessons can be gathered from his long life. We can learn from it to put first the really important things and not waste valuable hours and days in chasing after the things that perish," said Archbishop O'Shea in paying tribute to the late bishop. Bishop Brodie was a man of prayer,. and never neglected the spiritual life, he said. He would himself have been the last to claim any credit for what he had accomplished. He was prudent and careful in counsel, as his colleagues in the hierarchy and his clergy and people well knew. "Though he is dead, he yet lives in the hearts and minds of the people," added the Archbishop. "Let me, then, as your Metropolitan, offer to you the sincere sympathy of my colleagues in the hierarchy."
