ISSUE STILL IN BALANCE
LONDON, October 13. On the sixth day of the Russians' great attempt to breach the Dnieper line, the issue is still hanging in the balance, but the reports suggest that the scale is gradually coming down against the Germans. A correspondent of Moscow "Isves|tia" says that he can see the steeples and towers of Kiev less than two miles away. People who have escaped from Kiev told him that the Germans have burnt down hospitals, schools, and theatres there, and that German gallows are standing in one of the city squares. On the Gomel sector the Germans have lost 5500 men in a stubborn twoday battle.
