THE BURMA ROAD
JAPANESE OFFENSIVE
LONDON, October 13. A communique from Chungking says that the Japanese have opened a three? pronged drive on the Chinese section of the Burma Road. Japanese troops neat- the Yunnan-Burma border have been heavily reinforced in an effort to seize this section of China's lifeline. The Chinese have kept a tight grip ion much of this road, and a communique reports that in recent fighting two of the Japanese columns were stopped. The third column progressed, however, for some miles until the Chinese intercepted it, and fighting is in progress. In central Burma and in and around Mandalay, R.A.F. planes hajve been attacking rolling stock, railway tracks, and buildings. AE the aircraft, returned. •
