HOUSING PLAN
The new -features-of ■ the housing policy, as proposed by the National Party, were explained by Mr. CM. Bowden (National candidate for Wellington West) at a meeting in the Regal Theatre,; Karori, on Wednesday. Particular reference was made to the provision whereby, for a trifling weekly payment if desired by the owner* an insurance fund could be created which would pay off the mortgage in the event of death of the owner, so that the widow would have no further payments to make beyond annual rates and insurance/ The National Party Would provide houses both, for rental and for purchase as desired. The candidate also dealt with the cpst-of-living figures published by the Government Statistician showing that, whereas, a group of articles Would cost £ 1 in 1935, the cost in 1939 was £ 1 3s 8d and 1942 £ 1 6s 6d, the greater part of the increase being prewar. The figures for today; he said, would be still higher, and in addition there was hidden taxation in the form of subsidies paid to enable cost of goods to be held from further increases.
