September 23. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, attended by Major C. J. Hol-land-Martin, returned to Wellington this afternoon from a visit to certain of the Pacific Islands.
During his Excellency's absence the Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, G.C.M.G.) acted as the Deputy of the Governor-General. He was received by the Governor-General this evening.
Mr. Colin "Horsley (Wanganui), who has established himself as a pianist of note, now broadcasts regularly for the 8.8.C. He has also played at the Promenade Concerts, at the National Gallery, and Wigmore Hall, states "The Post's" London correspondent. Appreciation of the assistance given the Victoria University College by the late Dr. F. P. Keppel, president of the Carnegie Corporation, was expressed at last night's meeting of the council. Sir Thomas Hunter, the principal, said that Dr. Keppel had given a great impetus to certain aspects of the work of the college. During the slump, for instance, funds were provided to keep the W.E.A. going and to increase the libraries, and the college had received benefit indirectly from other ways in which Dr. Keppel had assisted. A Gazette notice announces that the appointments of Mr. Prescott Childs and Mr. Carl E. Christopherson as Consuls of the United States at Wellington, and that of Mr. Jefferson Jones 111 as Vice-Consul at Wellington, t have'; been. provisionally recognised.
