HOUSE OF ILL-FAME

The maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment and a fine of £100 was imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, 5.M.,, yesterday on Clara Hallam, apart-ment-hoiise keeper, 58, whom he convicted of permitting premises at 40 Abel Smith Street to be used as a house of ill-fame. The Magistrate said he was'satisfied there was overwhelming evidence that the house was and had been for a considerable time a brothel and that the accused had allowed it to be used as a house of illfame. ■ ■'■■• - .•":

The accused, he said, would have.- to remain in custody pending the decision of the Attorney-General. The hearing of the case started on Monday.
