GAOL AND FINE
HOUSE OF ILL-FAME
The maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment and a fine of £100 was imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, 5.M.,, yesterday on Clara Hallam, apart-ment-hoiise keeper, 58, whom he convicted of permitting premises at 40 Abel Smith Street to be used as a house of ill-fame. The Magistrate said he was'satisfied there was overwhelming evidence that the house was and had been for a considerable time a brothel and that the accused had allowed it to be used as a house of illfame. ■ ■'■■• - .•":
The prosecution was conducted by Senior-Sergeantr G. J. Paine. Mr. C. H. Weston, K.C., with him Mr, A. L. Hollings, appeared for the accused, and after sentence was imposed said the accused would appeal.. The Magistrate fixed security for appeal at £30, together with the amount of the fine. The accused, he said, would have.- to remain in custody pending the decision of the Attorney-General. The hearing of the case started on Monday.
